Data management is the practice of collecting, organizing, and interpreting the data that is created and amassed by any organization. In this era of computers, supplemented by the internet, it has become convenient to gather, collate and store data. However, given the vastness of data available, it is imperative for individuals and organizations to optimize the use of such information so as to better inform policy and regulation. Due to current set of data management techniques available, social scientists can now take educated decisions and so initiate appropriate actions to maximize benefits to society.
In order to inculcate the soft skills of data management, the Department of Economics of St Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai, has organized a Summer School entitled ‘DATA MANAGEMENT IN SOCIAL SCIENCES’. This Summer School will be held in the college campus from Monday 10th April 2023 to Thursday 20th April 2023.
The topics that would be engaged with during the Summer School include the role of Data Management for a Social Scientist in the 21st Century, role of Data Analytics in Policy Making, introduction to basic statistical tools to handle and manage data without coding and so on.
During the course of this summer school, multiple medium of resource sharing would be used like the usual lecture inputs, interaction with data experts, lecture demonstrations to handle data using computer applications as well as field visits. Towards the end of this summer school, the students will present their key learnings through thematic group presentations
Learning Objectives:
Through this summer school, the participants should be able to:
- Read, clean and manage any given dataset.
- Be familiar with statistical concepts needed to run an exploratory analysis of a
dataset. - Present data in an interesting and a stimulating manner.
- Be conscientized of the role of data management in different fields
- Hone in their soft skills connected to basic software like MS Excel to visualize data
and create reports.
Learning Outcomes:
Due to attending this summer school, the participants will be able to:
- Identify and recognize characteristics of the population in the dataset
- Interpret and evaluate strengths and problematics with the help of dataset
- Make data-based policy recommendations
- Hone in their narration skills through the use of data
- Create appealing dashboards to present data
- Articulate and present their ideas and data reports in a cogent and cohesive manner to a given target audience.
